This update is long overdue, because I struggled a bit with the time, but also with the development of the game. Here are the changes that you can expect with this update:

  • Hero selection: now you can select one of the predefined heroes instead of choosing a race + class. For now, and for the demo, only one character will be available: the Iron Guard (the name might change), but it’s the equivalent of a human fighter. I did this change because the way it was before, with selecting a combination of race + class, you would get a predefined character anyway to some degree, and the art requirements were pretty high, which I couldn’t cover for the time being. So I reduced the scope a bit, and settled on offering predefined heroes instead.

  • The core game mechanics were changed from being turn based to being real time: Now you regenerate HP and MP each second, and when you pick the “Poison” encounter, your HP starts to drop every second. I thought this was needed because of the remake of the combat.

  • The combat system was completely remade: I got previous feedback about the old turn based combat that it’s kind of boring, so I changed it to be more engaging and active: now, to attack, you need to click repeatedly to fill the “hit counter”, and you can also cast spells instantly. I am still open to feedback, as I think this turns the combat too much into a clicker. Maybe I should make it to be more like an idle battler instead? (jump in in our Discord or on our Subreddit and let me know what’t your opinion on this)

  • Added the Blacksmith encounter: now you can combine two items into one more powerful one. Not many recipes are available right now (only red shard + red shard = red gem and red gem + sword = winged sword), but I will expand on this system, and plan to add a recipe book as well.

  • Skill upgrading: you can buy upgrades for your skills at the Skill Forge: each level costs 50 gold and each spell has 9 upgrades (for a total of 10 levels). The descriptions are TBD right now, sorry about that :(

Other changes:

  • added skill graphical effects and sound effects
  • added more particles and SFX as game juice
  • added ingame menu (during a run, you can hit ESC to enter the in-game menu) where you can abandon the run or quit the game completely.
  • bugfixes

Also, an important update: I partnered up with an artist to give a better artistic direction to the game, so expect BIG AND AWESOME ART CHANGES in the upcoming feature!
