I just published a new update for the Quest of the Hero. In this update, I reworked some core mechanics, added some minimal juice here and there, and modified the content a little bit.

Here are the main changes:

  • Changed how the overall game progress. Instead of gaining Quest XP from runs and upgrading various badges, now the game has an unlockable tree (each node will unlock more game content, right now they don’t do anything), and you collect Relics. These relics can be gained by defeating enemies or from encounters.
  • Reduced the amount of randomness when generating characters. I found the initial character generation process way too chaotic and was basically making any attempt to strategize around builds useless. Instead, now you can choose a race (human, elf, dark elf, dwarf or skeleton) and a class (only fighter for now), and these come with certain stat bonuses and starting items. So each combination will always have the same stats and the same starting items, so you can plan ahead and strategize.
  • changed how the Chest works. Now you have to complete a minigame in order to open it, and if you fail 3 times, the chest is lost.
  • now you have to drag and drop items from the shop to buy them (feels more satisfying)

Next steps:

  • implement evasion and hit chance for weapons, so I can then add more weapon choices where I incorporate these (ex. bow with higher damage but lower hit chance).
  • add more skills
  • add more items
  • create a skill upgrade system in the Spell Forge
  • add a few unlockable encounters
  • add a new encounter type: blacksmith, where you can combine certain items to build new unique items, or upgrade existing items.
  • add a new encounter type: skill check (something in the idea of when you encounter a strength check, you will have a certain percentage chance of success, higher the more STR you have)
  • more game juice (particles, sounds, feedback) for things you do in the game
  • skill effects
  • status effects

The TOOD list is quite big, so I am pretty confident I won’t be able to deliver everything in the next update.
